Lecture and Workshop Topics will include: (attendees will be split into groups and each group will attend all of these topics in turn.)

 

1.        Tree Hazard Risk Assessment using the method they developed in the book, A Photographic Guide to the Evaluation of Hazard Trees in Urban Areas (4 hours, Lecture & Field Training with Matheny and Clark)

2.        Tree Crown Support with Modern Synthetic Systems (2 hours, Lecture & Field Training with Detter)

3.        Pollarding Methods, the History and Present Practice (30 minutes, Lecture with Ferrini)

4.        Resistograph for Measuring Wood Density; and Introduction (1 hour)

5.        European and American perspectives on ISA global development (30 minutes, Fountain, Ferrini and Rinn)

Price: HK$2900 per person (includes attendance to all lectures and workshops listed above on Nov. 20th and 21st: : Lunch provided for Nov. 21; Only 150 seats are available for Nov. 20-21)

About the Speakers

Nelda Matheny

Nelda is coauthor of five books including A Photographic Guide to the Evaluation of Hazard Trees in Urban Areas (2nd Ed., 1992, International Society of Arboriculture), and Arboriculture:  Integrated Management of Landscape Trees, Shrubs and Vines (4th Ed., 2004, Prentice Hall). She has published many technical articles in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry (formerly, Journal of Arboriculture), Arborist News, Tree Care Industry, and she has presented lectures and training programs arboriculture, horticulture and urban forestry throughout the U.S., Canada Europe and Australia.

 

Nelda is a Board Certified Master Arborist (WE-0195B) and Registered Consulting Arborist (#243). She has received the Alex Shigo Award for Arboricultural Education, Author’s Citation and Award of Merit from the International Society of Arboriculture, the Award of Merit from the ISA United Kingdom & Ireland Chapter and the Western Chapter; as well as the President’s Award and the Research Award from the Western Chapter ISA.

James R. Clark 

Jim is coauthor of four books including A Photographic Guide to the Evaluation of Hazard Trees in Urban Areas (2nd Ed., 1992, International Society of Arboriculture), and Arboriculture:  Integrated Management of Landscape Trees, Shrubs and Vines (4th Ed., 2004, Prentice Hall). He has published over 30 articles in referred journals including Arboriculture & Urban Forestry (formerly, Journal of Arboriculture), Journal of the American Society of Horticultural Science, HortScience, Arboricultural Journal and Journal of Environmental Horticulture, and has presented lectures in arboriculture and urban forestry throughout the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Europe and Australia.

 

Jim received the Alex Shigo Award for Arboricultural Education and the Author’s Citation from the International Society of Arboriculture, the Award of Merit from the ISA United Kingdom & Ireland Chapter, Pacific Northwest Chapter, and the Western Chapter; President’s Award from the Pacific Northwest Chapter and the Western Chapter, Research Award and Award of Achievement from the Western Chapter.

William Fountain

Dr. Fountain is a professor of arboriculture at the University of Kentucky.

He is a Board Certified Master Arborist and is the president of the Kentucky Arborists’ Association.  Bill is also vice president on the ISA Executive Committee and has been on the ISA Board of Directors since 2000. Bill is also the Director of the Kentucky Chapter of the ISA.

Francesco Ferrini

Ph.D., Professor of Arboriculture, University of Florence, Department of Horticulture, Sesto Fiorentino, FI, Italy Full Professor (Chairman) at the Department of Horticulture University of Florence (Italy) -- He has published more than 150 scientific and technical papers in Italian (82) and in English (69) in international referred and nationwide journals. He has given more than 90 talks in numerous international and national congresses. Francesco is also the Director of the ISA Italy.

Andreas Detter

Since 2000, Andreas has lectured and taught workshops in different European countries and the USA on high-tech tree assessment, tree-statics, cabling systems and physics.  Andreas holds an engineering degree in Landscape Design. He is member of the board of the SAG Association of Tree Experts and is co-founder of Brudi & Partner TreeConsult in Munich, Germany.

Frank Rinn

 

Frank Rinn of Heidelberg, Germany is the Executive Director of ISA Germany.  He is also owner of RINNTECH, where measurement devices for tree and timber inspection are developed, applied, and sold to tree/wood scientists and experts from various disciplines.  Frank developed the first electronic needle drill resistance machines in 1986, and holds a corresponding patent from 1990.  He has been recognized internationally for his advancements in technical wood analysis, and has received four innovation awards for his contribution to the industry.

Lawrence Chau

Lawrence is a plant ecologist by training.  He has been studying, researching and working on native plant conservation for more than 20 years.  More recently, he also has worked on urban greening, arboriculture and tree management since 2003.  He is an ISA Certified Arborist, a member of the Old and Valuable Tree Expert Group of LCSD; committee member of the Community Involvement Committee on Greening of the Home Affairs Bureau; co-opt member of the Strategy Sub-committee of the Sustainable Development Council, committee member of Green Fun and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong People’s Council for Sustainable Development.

Ken So

 

 

Conservation Manager of the Conservancy Association. He is an ISA Certified Arborist and Certified Tree Worker working closely on the condition monitoring of registered Old and Valuable Trees in Hong Kong. He has worked in afforestation and urban tree management fields for over 12 years. Ken is also a member of Old and Valuable Tree Expert Group of LCSD.
