| primary (primary line) |
high-voltage distribution electric supply line, usually 2,400 to 34,500 volts, that carries electricity from distribution substations to distribution transformers.

| primary elements |
nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Included in various ratios in fertilizer. See also essential elements, macronutrient, and micronutrient.

| Proctor test |
test used to determine the relationship between soil moisture content and soil density.

| prop |
rigid brace, acting in compression, to support a tree, tree branch, or utility pole. Prop pole. Contrast with guy.

| protection zone |

| provenance |
geographic origin of a plant, differing from the range of a species or where a species can be expected to be hardy.

| pruning |
removing branches (or occasionally roots) from a tree or other plant using approved practices, to achieve a specified objective.

| pruning cycle |
in utility and municipal arboriculture, the time scheduled between pruning events that is established as a guideline for providing reasonable clearance between trees and conductors. See cycle.

| Prusik hitch |
type of multi-wrapped friction hitch used in climbing and rigging. A common use is to attach the Prusik loop to the climbing line when footlocking.

| Prusik loop |
loop of rope used to form a Prusik hitch for climbing or rigging.
|
| Prusik minding |
specific type of pulley configured with extended cheek plates to keep a Prusik hitch from jamming in the sheave.

| pull line (tagline) |
line attached near the top of a tree to be felled or section of a tree to be removed to help pull or guide it in the desired direction or to control its swing.

| pulley |
device consisting of a rotating, grooved wheel between two side plates. Used to change the direction of pull in a line. May be used as part of a mechanical advantage system. Compare to block.

| pupa (pl. pupae) |
resting stage of an insect just prior to transforming to an adult. Stage at which adult morphology is acquired.
