plant part that uses or stores more energy than it produces.

| sinker roots |
downward-growing roots that provide anchorage and take up water and minerals. Especially useful during periods of drought.

| sinus |
space between two lobes of a leaf. Contrast with lobe.

| site analysis |
(1) consideration or evaluation of the conditions, restrictions, and environment of a planting site. (2) consideration or evaluation of a construction or development site requiring a tree conservation or preservation plan.

| skeletonized |
leaf-feeding damage caused by insects (skeletonizers), characterized by the loss of tissue between the leaf veins.

any of several devices used to facilitate taking up slack in the climbing line.

device used in rigging to secure equipment or pieces being rigged.

| slip knot |
slipped overhand knot.
