in mechanics, the action of forces to stretch or pull apart any material or substance. Contrast with compression.

stretching force put on a tree limb. Can pose a potential hazard.

in broadleaved trees, reaction wood that forms on the upper side of branches or the trunks of leaning trees. Contrast with compression wood.

bud at the tip of a twig or shoot. Apical bud. Contrast with lateral bud.
