Term Definition
washer
heavy-duty steel hardware installed on through-hardware between the tree surface and the nut.
water knot
variation of the overhand knot. Used in joining the two ends of a length of webbing to create a loop sling. See beer knot.
water table
upper level of groundwater in the soil.
water-holding capacity
ability of a soil to hold moisture.
water-insoluble nitrogen (WIN)
nitrogen fertilizer in a form that is not readily soluble in water.
watersprout
upright, epicormic shoot arising from the trunk or branches of a plant above the root graft or soil line. Incorrectly called a sucker. Contrast with sucker.
watt (W)
standard unit of measurement of electrical power. Rate of work done per unit of time (joules per second). Electrical power (P) is expressed as voltage (V) multiplied by current (I):P = V?? I.
webbing
sturdy fabric woven in narrow widths for use where strength is required.
webbing sling (web sling)
length of sewn webbing, often formed into a loop, used as an attachment in rigging.
weight
force created by the action of the earth (gravity) on an object.
white rot
fungal decay of wood in which both cellulose and lignin are broken down. Contrast with brown rot and soft rot.
whoopie sling
sling with one fixed eye and one adjustable eye, made from hollow-braid rope.
whorled
leaves, twigs, or branches arranged in a circle around a point on the stem. Contrast with alternate and opposite.
wilt
(1) (noun) loss of turgor and subsequent drooping of leaves and young stems; a symptom. (2) (noun) infectious disease caused by a particular agent on a particular host or range of hosts. (3) (verb) to lose turgor or to wilt.
wilting point
see permanent wilting point.
WIN
see water-insoluble nitrogen.
windthrow
tree failure due to uprooting caused by wind.
winter kill
injury from cold winter temperatures.
wire basket
type of metal basket used to support the root ball of a balled-and-burlapped tree or a tree dug with a tree spade.
wire strop
flip line with a steel core.
