Term Definition
xanthophyll
yellow pigment found in plants. Compare to anthocyanin and carotenoid.
Xeriscape
use of plant materials (usually native plants) and practices that minimizes landscaping water use. Term for environmentally friendly form of landscaping. The term was copyrighted by the Denver (Colorado) Water Department in 1981. See minimum irrigation.
xylem
main water- and mineral-conducting (unidirectional, up only) tissue in trees and other plants. Provides structural support. Arises (inward) from the cambium and becomes wood after lignifying. Contrast with phloem.
